a lot of animal cruelty
There is a lot of fascinating information in this book, but I’m amazed at the outdated attitude towards animals throughout the book. The way they are described are like mere unfeeling objects. Animal experimentation is incredibly outdated and these so-called ‘hero’ scientists are doing the most unthinkable, cruel things to the animals.
The killing, maiming and suffering of the animals is not even examined apart from brief descriptions of the potential for humans. It is the kind of attitude I’d expect from the time of Descartes and for someone so caring towards humans, is totally lacking in empathy for other beings who are capable of feelings, friendships, feeling pain etc.
Whether they’re talking about xenotransplantation from pigs to primates, blinding mice and then attempting to treat them before killing them or abusing animals simply for anti ageing, if we look below the surface it is a horror show. Not to mention the fact that many results in animals are not representative of what will happen in humans.
As humans we should be beyond this now. When he talks of baboons who went onto live 9 months after a pig transplant it seems so simple, but imagine all the suffering that sentence actually covers.
The speciesism throughout the book was very disappointing and I had to try to focus on the helpful bits.
