Publisher's Summary

Set before the events of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, this new novel is a thrilling follow-up to Star Wars: Darth Plagueis.

It's kill or be killed in the space penitentiary that houses the galaxy’s worst criminals, where convicts face off in gladiatorial combat while an underworld gambling empire reaps the profits of the illicit blood sport. But the newest contender in this savage arena, as demonic to behold as he is deadly to challenge, is fighting for more than just survival. His do-or-die mission, for the dark masters he serves, is to capture the ultimate weapon: an object that will enable the Sith to conquer the galaxy.

Sith lords Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious are determined to possess the prize. And one of the power-hungry duo has his own treacherous plans for it. But first, their fearsome apprentice must take on a bloodthirsty prison warden, a cannibal gang, cutthroat crime lord Jabba the Hutt, and an unspeakable alien horror. No one else could brave such a gauntlet of death and live. But no one else is the dreaded dark-side disciple known as Darth Maul.

On the unique side of Star Wars stories

Maul: Lockdown plays like a B-Grade midnight movie that once you start there is something about it you want to see how it all wraps up. Now in saying this a B-grade is not a slight on the book, it is just how it feels. I own the Hardcover and am a MASSIVE Maul fan so I decided to grab the audio version, (as Star Wars audiobooks with full on SFX and John Williams scores are great to go to sleep to, for me). It really is the superior way to with Maul; and is how I would recommend hearing the tale of Maul going undercover in a prison that doubles as a gladiator fight cage under orders from Darth Sidious to find out about Nukes… yes, nukes in Star Wars! Maul also cannot be seen to be a using to Force, as the fight are played out live on the HoloNet, or to give away his affiliation with the Sith.

Jonathan Davis is a fantastic narrator, absolutely amazing. He and Marc Thompson both. And here Davis really brings alive the brooding, somber atmosphere in Maul. Schreiber does a good job at keeping the story going, although one sub-plot felt like it wasn’t needed and the horror element implemented feels more forced (puns) than an organic component.
While not in my favorite Star Wars stories, it is indeed one of the most unique and is worth a listen to if you aare at least a Maul or Prequel Era fan.

    eh

A simple story with some decent action and a small amount of intrigue, I enjoyed this book until maybe halfway, after that everything falls apart, the story makes no sense, the intrigue has a borning reveal and overall is just unsatisfying

narrator was top notch though and the star wars universe is a nice one to read about.
